Say What? America’s Latest “Lifestyle Disease” Adrenal Insufficiency & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Have you ever heard of Adrenal Insufficiency and/or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? Probably not, but you soon will. With the rampant over-use of energy drinks and I’m sorry to say canned iced coffees with added guarana and Yerba Mate, American’s are putting there health at risk. Whenever you drink a beverage with a central nervous system stimulant ie. “traditional” coffee, or coffee loaded with added guarana or other “quick acting” stimulants you put your body into an “artificial crises” and intialize/activate the adrenal organs (above your kidney’s) to release the “Fight or Flight” adrenal hormones: Cortisol and Adrenaline. These adrenal hormones are critical for when we are under perceived environmental stress.
The problem with these energy drinks is that they do next to nothing to build back the bodies adrenal reserves, and as a consequence, the over-use of these “quick-acting short-duration” energy drinks quickly deplete your adrenal hormones and over-time reduce your “adaptive reserve” so that when you have a “real or actual perceived” crises or major stressor your body does not have the necessary resources to respond correctly.

Like a battery that has been over-used without recharging, your body begins to fail (adrenal insufficiency and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is the result).

One Of the Best Ways To Keep Coffee Fresh.

Coffees public enemy number #1: Oxygen

A Simple Way To Help Protect Yourself From Illness

Did you know that a person touches their face on average 16 times per hour? With viruses such as H1N1 showing that it can survive for many hours on a variety of surfaces it is more important than ever to not touch with your palm or fingertips your eyes, nose, mouth and ears, without being aware of what the’ve been in contact with. I know this can be difficult to remmember & be consistent with, but considering this is the main transmission/entry source that viruses and bacteria use to enter our bodies, being cognizant of consistently using anti-bacteria hand lotion, and or washing your hands often can help make a difference in you as well as others getting sick or not. Common sense, but as a Health Educator, I observe daily how little awareness and consistency we humans have for this important disease preventative habit. Mother was right, go wash your hands.

Bogus product claims and your health.

So many products today tout studies showing that their products can do this or that for your health, but can they really? Always be wary of a product and company that does not do INDEPENDENT lab testing on their FINISHED product and then tells you that it will do what the studied ingredient in their product does. While it is fine to report that an ingredient in a product has been shown to have health benefits be itself, it is unethical and wrong for a company to say that their product will do the same thing as the “ingredient” in the product without independent lab testing the finished product WITH the ingredient to show that it really has an effect. This is a BIG problem in our society. Marketing has stretched the truth so far on product claims that it is hard to see the truth when we see it.
Always ask for independent lab results and NEVER assume that just because a product has a healthy ingredient in it that the product will do what the ingredient does unless it has been tested and “shown” to do what is claimed.

Recent Study: Multivitamins have no impact on reducing disease.

WASHINGTON — Long-term multivitamin use has no impact on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular diseases or overall mortality in postmenopausal women, according to a study led by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and published in the current issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study examined the effects of multivitamins on nearly 162,000 women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative, and the women were followed for about eight years. Forty-two per cent of participants reported using multivitamins on a regular basis, and the study found no significant differences in the risk of cancer, heart diseases or death between multivitamin users and non-users.

“The Women’s Health Initiative is one of the largest studies ever done on diet and health,” said Marian L. Neuhouser, lead author of the study. “Thus, because we have such a large and diverse sample size, including women from 40 sites across the nation, our results can be generalized to a healthy population.”

About half of Americans use dietary supplements, collectively spending more than $20 billion a year on such products. Researchers said scientific data supporting health benefits of supplements is lacking.

“The motivations for supplement use vary, but common reasons include the belief that these preparations will prevent chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease,” the authors of the study said. “These views are often fueled by product health claims, consumer testimonials and an industry that is largely unregulated owing to the 1994 Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act.”
